Keep a Shortlist: Plan a Weekend Shop Without 20 Tabs
Weekend shopping runs fail in predictable ways. The list is vague, the browser tabs multiply, and you arrive at a store to discover the one thing you actually needed isn't in stock. A simple shortlist method fixes this — and it works whether you use a comparison tool or not.
What a Shortlist Actually Is
A shortlist is not your shopping list. Your shopping list is everything you need. Your shortlist is the two or three places you've already decided you'd actually buy from, for a specific item, on a specific day.
Most people skip the shortlisting step. They open a search engine, click on whatever appears, end up with seven tabs, and spend twenty minutes comparing things that aren't quite comparable. The shortlist method closes that loop before you leave home.
The Five-Step Method
Step one: Write a precise list. Vague list items create vague searches. For each thing you need, note the brand and model name (or a clear description), the size or specification, and whether you need it today or whether it can wait. That last point matters more than most people realise — "need today" and "happy to wait a week" point you toward completely different decisions.
Step two: Group by category. Cluster your list into general merchandise, hardware or DIY, and specialist items. This tells you which retailers are worth shortlisting before you've opened a single tab.
Step three: Pick two or three retailers per category. Resist the urge to consider everything a search engine surfaces — particularly ads and sponsored placements, which are there because someone paid to be visible, not because they're the best option. You already know which two or three stores you'd realistically visit or order from. Start there.
Step four: Collapse the comparison. Run each specific item through Find It once to see what's available across the stores it covers. The goal is to get to one or two finalists per item, not to collect more options.
Step five: Confirm, then route the trip. Check stock and click & collect availability on your finalists' own pages. Plan your drive in order of geography and closing times — not by whichever tab you happened to open first.
Why This Beats "Open All the Ads"
Search results are built for discovery, not decision-making. They're optimised to generate clicks, which means they're optimised to keep you in a state of considering — not finishing. A shortlist, by contrast, is optimised for the opposite: getting to a decision with the least possible friction.
The Saturday morning that ends with a clear list, a single purposeful drive, and everything ticked off is not the result of shopping harder. It's the result of shopping with a method.
Where Find It Fits
Find It is designed to help with step four: collapsing the comparison across Australian retailers in a single search rather than visiting each site individually. It won't invent stock that isn't there, and it doesn't replace the final confirmation step on the retailer's own page. Think of it as the tool that gets you to your two finalists faster — the shortlist itself is still yours to make.
