LEGO Classic Medium (10696) vs Large (10698) Creative Brick Box Comparison

LEGO Classic Medium (10696) vs Large (10698) Creative Brick Box Comparison

Stepping up from LEGO's Medium Creative Brick Box to the Large set adds $26 to the price tag, but it does not just buy extra bricks—it flips the entire building focus from vehicles to architecture.

At $39 at Big W and Kmart, the Medium box costs 40.0% less than the $65 Large box, making the choice hinge on whether your builder wants to assemble things that roll or things that stay put.

Wheels versus walls

The Medium set (10696) includes 484 pieces and packs a massive 18 tyres and 18 wheel rims. If your kid wants a garage full of cars, trucks, and moving creations, the cheaper set gives you triple the wheel hardware of its larger counterpart.

The Large set (10698) trades those extra wheels for architectural features. Despite offering 790 pieces, it shrinks the wheel inventory down to just six tyres and six rims, redirecting its budget into eight different types of windows and doors with matching frames.

Baseplates and building scale

The extra 306 pieces in the Large box give you a far broader palette for larger builds, supported by two green baseplates—including a generous 16cm by 16cm square plate and a smaller 12cm by 6cm strip.

The Medium set offers only a single 8cm by 16cm baseplate. That works as a small chassis or display patch, but limits static scenes unless you buy additional baseplates separately.

The $4 retailer markup

If you settle on the Medium set, store selection matters. Big W and Kmart both sell the 10696 box for $39, while Target lists the exact same set for $43.

Buying at Big W or Kmart saves you 9.3% ($4.00 less) compared to Target without sacrificing a single brick or accessory.

Verdict

Buy the Medium set (10696) for $39 at Big W or Kmart if maximum vehicle construction and low cost are your priorities. Upgrade to the $65 Large set (10698) if houses, doors, and broad foundations matter most—and avoid Target's $43 markup on the Medium box.
